K9 Web Protection Review

by DJ on October 18, 2009

Today I want to discuss a program that is used for content filtering.  Content filtering can be a good solution if there are children who use the computer in the house.  There is a lot of dangerous content and sites on the Internet and the need to protect our children is extremely important.

K9 Web Protection is a free solution that is used to filter content.  I have installed this on family member’s computers and have found that it is a great piece of software.  The filtering is a very easy process.  When I installed it on my mom’s computer, I used keywords to filter the content.  Some of the keywords that my mom wanted me to use was porn, YouTube, and Limewire.

When I say filtering content, it just means that I blocked certain types of content.  So when the kids in my mom’s house types the word porn or anything that has the word porn in it, K9 Web Protection will let out a loud bark.  The software will let out a bark whenever one of the blocked keywords are typed or used in any browser.

I installed this on a friend’s computer because he has some teenagers that like to visit some pornographic Web sites.  He called me and told me a funny story.  He was sitting on the couch watching TV and one of his sons were on the computer.  His son tried to access a pornographic site and the computer let out a loud bark that scared the kid.  He went up to see what the kid was doing and when he got there his son was in shock.  The bark really scared the **** out of the kid.  He has told me that the kids do not try and access any porno sites anymore (LOL).

If anyone would like to bypass the content filter, the person will be required to enter a password.  Here are some of the features of K9 Web Protection and can be found HERE.

Block 60 Content Categories

This feature allows you to filter 60 different categories.  The categories are stored in the Blue Coat database, are updated regularly, and contain over eight million ratings of websites and domains.

Time Restrictions

K9 Web Protection allows the user to restrict certain times when these sites can be accessed.  For example, the kids are gone during the day so we can just restrict the times when they get home and on the weekend.

Web Site Restriction

K9 Web Protection has the ability to block or allow access to certain Web sites.

Blocking Effects

The software will send out an alert whenever it blocks one of the user-defined restrictions (the barking sound).  K9 also enables a time out feature.  If a user attempts to visit a restricted site to many times in a specified time period, K9 will block all Web access for a certain amount of time.

URL Keywords

K9 allows the user to block access to Web pages that have a certain keyword.  If the Web site has a blocked keyword in the address, the software will block access to the site.

Web Search Option

K9 Web Protection offers the option of enforcing the use of Google SafeSearch, which diminishes the amount of adult material that might be returned because of an Internet search.  This feature is enabled by default.  Currently, K9 Web Protection supports the safe search functionality of the Google Search Engine only.

View Reports and Activities

K9 Web Protection allows you to view reports of all Internet browsing activity and administrative actions.

Conclusion

If there are young children in the house and you feel the need to restrict access to certain Web pages, then K9 Web Protection is the solution for you.  The software was very easy to setup.  It took about 20 minutes to setup and test K9 Web Protection.  As far as the price, you cannot beat the price tag of free.  Download K9 Web Protection Now

But do the website suggest few words as example that should be blocked if a person wishes for content filtering or porn website blocking.

@Hobo

Let’s say you block the keyword porn. If the word porn or anything porn related is typed in the address or search bar, the software will automatically block access to the page or search. Hope this answers your question.

@Dana

I am sure there are ways to bypass the program and the people I installed the program for have said they have not had any problems yet.

Warning! Do not use K9 program. It’s impossible to get off your computer once it’s on. There’s no support to help you remove it. I put it on my children’s computers a few years ago and want to take it off, but can’t. I saved the passwords, but they do not work. When I click get a new password, the next page doesn’t load, giving an error message.

You can give it a try, but I totally do not recommend it. Email me if you want to know how mad I am not being able to get it off. mcguirefolks@yahoo.com

I have not had any problems with uninstalling K9 Web Protection. I will have to look into it a little further to see if I can uninstall it from my moms computer.
