LED TVs have become more and more popular among consumers, who tend to choose these over other top models. Many people do not fully understand however, how an LED TV differs from other televisions. Keep reading the following information in order to better understand some key differences that LED TVs offer, that other televisions do not.

First off, people should understand that an LED television is, in fact, an LCD TV. What makes a regular LCD television differ from an LED TV is how it lights up the screen. Each TV uses different technology, for example an LCD TV lights up the screen by using fluorescent backlights, and an LED TV uses LED backlights to light up the screen. It is also important to know that LED TVs have two main ways that they use the backlights to light up the screen.

The first way that backlights are used in LED television sets are known as “edge lighting”. This is a technology in which the LED lights are evenly spaced along the outer edge of the television screen. The screen is lit by the LED lights shining the light towards the middle of the screen.

Edge lighting gives the benefit that the television is able to be produced in a very thin model. The disadvantage of this however, is that the screen is not able to portray deep black areas and the middle of the screen tends to be brighter than the rest.

Full array, or full LED, backlighting is the other type of backlighting that can be found in LED TVs. This form of backlighting consists of LED lights being placed in a consistent spacing across the whole area of the screen.

The main benefit of having a full array LED TV is that it provides what is called “local dimming”. Local dimming is a process in which each LED light, or even a group of LED lights are able to turn on and off independently. Many people prefer this because it allows more contrast in colors, meaning dark spots on the screen are darker and bright spots are brighter. One disadvantage of a full array television however, is that it is not able to be as thin as the other model.

Since LED televisions are designed differently than other LCD models, there are other benefits that can be found in an LED TV that can not be found in an LCD TV. A few of these benefits include that an LED one uses less energy than an LCD TV does. They also do not use any mercury, whereas some LCD models do, and LED televisions give a more balanced array of colors.

It is very important that people understand the difference between regular LCD TVs and LED televisions before they invest in one. One area to consider is whether or not it is important to have a thin TV. Another consideration is whether or not having a high contrast in colors is important. Because both types of LED TVs offer benefits, it is really up to personal preference as to which one is better to buy. One thing for sure though, LED TVs are pleasing to many people.

I want to apologize for not posting anything these past couple of days.  I have been at a Union convention in Indianapolis.  I am the delegate for Local 2601 which is for the Lafayette School Corporation.  Tonight at our banquet we had a Michael Jackson tribute and they brought in a look-alike or impersonator.  I only caught the last eight minutes of the act.  Here is the video.

Ok, have been bragging about the iPhone, and will continue to do so, but right now let’s give the Digital Video Recorder its shining moment. I have to say that other than my iPhone my favorite piece of technology is the DVR. Who doesn’t love something that can be set to record whatever it is you don’t have time to watch on a consistent basis?!

I will admittedly reveal that I love several television shows. Let’s face it, if you haven’t kept up on your shows, whatever they may be, you will have nothing to talk about at work. I can’t go in to work on Friday morning without hearing the words, “Dee, did you see Supernatural last night?” Yes, I love Supernatural…there I said it! Chances are you do too! I digress…let’s get back on topic, the DVR.
It is a wonderful contraption that is very affordable. It is nice for someone, such as myself, who works well more than eight hours a day and never knows what the next day will bring or when you might get home. I, as sad as it may seem, am happy that the television shows I love can be recorded at home while I am unexpectedly busy with work. Also, go ahead and say it…no commercials! I love being able to skip through commercials and not have to watch that nasty little glob of snot freak about Mucinex.

Yes, the DVR is a magical machine. You may be asking, “Why magical?” Well I will tell you why. DJ and I work different shifts and do not get to see each other as much as I would like. Having the DVR to record his, mine, and our shows allows us to be able to watch the things we enjoy together. It makes for entertaining cuddle time on the weekends. No not that way you perve!

It may sound silly, but I am sure there are others out there that know exactly what I’m talking about. If you have cable or satellite and do not also have a DVR then, “What are you waiting for?!” Go get one now before all your friends find out and make fun of you for not having one. I promise it is one purchase you won’t regret.

From time to time I will be doing some posts that are off topic, this is one of them.  This is about me injuring my arm and missing a few days of work.  The story begins about a month ago at a family reunion.  My girlfriends two cousins got married and didn’t bother to tell anybody so Dee’s mom wanted to have a surprise party for them.  At this party is where I first injured my arm.  Here is how it happened.

I just got done throwing around a football when I saw Dee sitting alone at a picnic table, so I decided to join her.  I sat on the same side that Dee was on (big mistake), the picnic table tipped over and before it hit the ground I dove out of it to save myself (yes very selfish).  In the process of doing this, I injured my elbow (Dee was just fine don’t worry).  My arm has been sore since this incident but I am not the kind of person that likes to go see the doctor.

A few days ago my exercise machine finally came in the mail, maybe you saw the commercial on TV, it’s called the Tower 200.  The Tower 200 is as my girlfriend would call it, “a mini Bowflex”.  It has three different tension settings on each side and the best thing about the Tower 200 is it mounts to the door.

I was pretty excited when I got this “machine” if you will.  First day I worked out for 20 minutes and on the second day I worked out for 45 minutes and that’s when I hurt my arm.  I was doing some curls and when I curled my left arm I heard a pop in my elbow.  I went to the doctor and they took x-rays which came back negative but the doctor did want me to take a break that day.  He also gave me a weird looking brace to put on my arm.  Here is a picture of the device.

Yesterday, I woke up and my arm still hurt and it was swollen.  I went to the doctor and he told me I needed to take the day off once again and go to work on Monday.  I cannot workout for a couple of weeks which is really a bummer and I even have to wear the brace when I am typing.  If I don’t wear the brace it hurts to even type.  I have to say it was really “A Series of Unfortunate Events”.

A few days ago, I wrote an article of my top three paid iPhone apps.  Now I am going to write about my top five free iPhone apps.  Here is the list of my top five.

• Daily Finance

There was a time when I was completely obsessed with the stock market.  It got to the point where I was checking on my stocks every ten minutes.  Daily Finance helped me keep track of my portfolio.  It provided real-time quotes, financial news, charts, global markets, gainers, and losers.  You can save numerous ticker symbols in the portfolio manager so you do not have to enter a stocks ticker symbol when doing research.  You can also save up to 25 different portfolios if you would like.  This app really made managing my portfolio so much easier and kept me up to date with the latest news about my stocks.

• Facebook

This app is self-explanatory as the name speaks for itself.  Get the latest news from your friends, upload and share photos, send and receive messages.  If you are, an avid Facebook user then this app is must have.  This app has the same functionality as if you were on your computer.

• Sporting News (NFL)

This is truly an awesome app.  This app is a necessity for all the hardcore football fans out there (me included).  Keep up to date with the latest scores, stats, and news around the league.  This app also allows you to pick your favorite team and displays the score at the top of the screen.  You can also scroll to weeks ahead to see who your favorite team is playing and the time.

• Pandora

Pandora is an awesome app that lets you listen to your favorite band or genre of music.  You can also program it to play random songs from the various genres.  When you enter in the band you want to listen to, not only do you get to hear their popular songs, you hear popular songs from artist in that same genre.

• Shazam

Shazam is useful if you hear a song on the radio and do not know who the artist is.  When you hear an unknown song, open up Shazam and press the middle button in the screen to find out the artist and song name.  You can identify music from the radio, TV, and movies.  I have found this app very useful when listening to the oldies channel.
