Why You Should Become Computer Literate

by DJ on September 5, 2009

It is safe to say that there are computers everywhere we look.  You can find them in cars, stores, malls, hospitals, homes, and in your pocket.  A person can interact with a computer and not even know it.  When you stick a bag of popcorn in the microwave, you are actually using a computer.  When you make a phone call to your significant other, you are using a computer.  Computers can be as small as a cell phone or as big as satellite floating in outer space.  So why is it important to become computer literate?  Being computer literate simply means you are familiar with computers, know how to use them, and you know their capabilities as well as the restrictions.

Benefits to being computer literate are:

  1. You can use your computer more wisely
  2. Can be of high value in every job field
  3. Help you better understand future technologies

I currently work with many people that are not computer literate.  I work in an Elementary school and some of the teachers are elderly and nearing retirement.  Nowadays schools are filled with technology.  Kindergarten classes have eight computers in them, they have smart boards, Elmo’s, and a lot of the time there is no grading papers because they have scanners to do that.  Some of the teachers are asking me to help them check their email, and a few did not even know how to check their voice mail on their phones.  It is really a crazy thing to see how far technology has come and when our kids go to school technology is going to be even bigger.  Therefore, if you fall into the select few that are not computer literate start reading some books or surf the net for answers or ask me.

It is not hard to become computer literate; it takes time, reading, and a little effort.  Everyone has to start somewhere so why not start now!  You do not want your kindergartener coming home and teaching you now do you?
